Today was the first round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral’s Blue Monster and what a day of golf it was! In perfect scoring conditions, we saw many of the world’s best players go really low, including Tiger Woods. Woods had nine birdies and shot a 6-under 66 that gave him a share of the lead with Bubba Watson, Graeme McDowell, Sergio Garcia and Freddie Jacobson. Phil Mickelson, Steve Stricker and Hunter Mahan are among the players that are just one shot behind. Perhaps one of the most entertaining shots today was from Phil Mickelson though, after a cart path aided 450 yard drive, he hit a 30-yard wedge shot off the cart path to within 10 feet and made the putt for birdie! Make sure you check out the highlights below! Along with Woods was Rory McIlroy and Luke Donald – the world’s number 1, 2 and 3 players.
However, it was more of the same for world number one, Rory McIlroy, who “grinded it out” to shoot a 1-over 73 today. After his round, he went straight to the range to practice some more – hopefully he’ll have a better round tomorrow! McIlroy has yet to break par in any of his rounds so far this season. So much is expected of a world number one – find out some of Tiger’s insights on the topic.
After the WGC-Cadillac Championship though, new owner Donald Trump plans to make some significant changes to the Blue Monster. Working with architect Gil Hanse, who is also in charge of building the Olympic golf course in Rio de Janeiro, they plan to lengthen some holes, create an island green at the par-3 15th and moving around some greens and tees. The most notable would the plan to move the tee on the par-5 10th hole farther left so the tee shot is completely over water. Slopes, mounds and the rough will also be changed and added to let spectators stand on these hills to see what’s going on in the fairway – a great idea!
We’re looking forward to seeing how the rest of this tournament will pan out – stay tuned!
