A new year brings new products into the golfing industry and Titleist is no different. However, Titleist also decided to improve the most popular golf ball on the PGA Tour, the Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf ball. Adam Scott has already won with a prototype of the new version of the 2013 ProV1 at the 2012 Australian Open in November. The changes are not revolutionary but according to Bill Morgan, senior vice president of golf ball research and development at Titleist,”This is the softest feeling Pro V1 we have ever made.”
To make the ball feel softer, Titleist had to lower the compression of the golf ball but its core material is fundamentally the same. The Pro V1 version of the ball remains a three-piece ball, with a large, solid core under an ionomer casing layer and a 352-dimple urethane cover. The Pro V1x is a four-piece ball and it features an inner and outer core under an ionomer casing layer and 328-dimple cast urethane cover. In comparison to the Pro V1, the Pro V1x provides golfers with even less spin off the tee and the inner core material is even softer than the core of the three-piece Pro V1. There are a few more subtle changes that the new versions of the golf balls will have on your shots but generally, less spin will result in a flatter, more controlled ball flight.
Aside from functionality, Titleist also improved on the ball’s cosmetics. By adding a sun-blocking material into the cover of both the Pro V1 and the Pro V1x, the white color of the ball is more resistant from fading or browning if the cover gets scuffed or scratched. A new process was also implemented in order to apply paint more thinly and uniformly, without sacrificing durability, to the golf ball. By doing this, it has enhanced the aerodynamics of the dimples.
