Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy went head to head in a duel yesterday at Mission Hills Haikou’s Blackstone Golf Course on the island of Hainan, China. This was the second “duel” they’ve played in the past two years, the first being at Jinsha Lake Golf Club on the Mainland in Zhengzhou.
At their first meeting, Rory defeated Tiger by one stroke and it was the same story this time around at Mission Hills Haikou. Rory would beat a feverish Tiger by one stroke by making four birdies and an eagle over the last seven holes for a 6-under 67! This was Rory’s first “victory” of 2013, although he did finish T2 at the Kolon Korea Open and showing signs of improvement in his game.
Rory was expected to be sharper as he has been playing in Asia for the past couple of weeks whereas Tiger has not played competitively since the Presidents Cup three weeks ago. Knowing this, Ahmad Rashad, who was an on course commentator, asked Rory what this “win” meant to him and he turned to Tiger to say “I beat you by one shot twice. You schooled me this year.” Tiger did have one great year, winning five times and voted as Player of the Year.
Aside from the golf, Tiger and Rory were both mic’d up on the course, so we got to hear their conversations between shots. They talked about a mixture of things ranging from their latest experiments with equipment (the Covert 2.0 and softer RZN Black – see photos of the Covert 2.0 above in their swing portraits) to travel plans to the NFL! It looked like a lot of fun between the two today, with some great golf played on the back 9 – in case you missed it, watch the whole match above and some behind the scenes action below!
