Tiger Woods At The Honda Classic

Back in January, you may have remembered the #DesignForTiger competition by Nike Golf and NIKEiD, where Tiger Woods would select a fan designed TW’14 golf shoe to wear during tournament play. If you noticed his feet during Round 1 of the Honda Classic this year, he wore this custom, fan designed TW’14 featuring a patriotic red, white and blue colour scheme. Dane Thompson submitted this winning design, inspired by the USA winter Olympic team and the upcoming 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles.

The design consists of a white leather upper and blue midsole with a red Swoosh, Nike Flywire and laces. In addition to seeing Tiger wear his design in competition, Thompson also received a pair himself, signed by Tiger! It’s not the first time we’ve seen NIKEiD TW’14 golf shoes though – NIKEiD Japan had some great designs featured as well and recently came out with even more colourways! But it wasn’t all about fashion for Tiger Woods at the Honda Classic – it was also about winning a golf tournament.

The week didn’t go as he planned though, as he shot 71-69-65 during the first three rounds of the tournament. He came off his best score on Tour in seven months on Saturday and started the final round 7-shots off the lead, but all hopes of repeating his performance from the 2012 Honda Classic where he shot a final round 62 ended quickly. Tiger was 5-over par through 13 holes and 12 shots off the lead before he withdrew from play without finishing his round.

He cited lower back spasms as the cause of his withdrawal, the same pain he felt during the Barclays Championship during the FedEx Cup last year. His participation in next week’s WGC-Cadillac Championship is now up in the air due to this injury, but as he said, it’s still “too early to tell” whether he wil play or not. Perhaps if the injury wasn’t there, Tiger might have been able to even get into a playoff – he would have had to shoot a 67 to do that! We hope he gets healthy again soon, especially with the Masters just a little over a month away!
