Paul McGinely was named the 2014 Ryder Cup Captain for Team Europe this morning. The next Ryder Cup will be held in Gleneagles, Scotland and McGinley will seek to defend the trophy. The 46-year-old Irishman will replace Jose Maria Olazabal, whose team won the 2012 Ryder Cup during the “Miracle at Medinah” (or “Meltdown at Medinah” depending on how you look at it!) at Medinah, outside Chicago.
McGinley has been on three Ryder Cup-winning teams and was vice captain for Europe in 2010 and last year at Medinah. This decision has gathered a lot of support from the European players, especially world number one, Rory McIlroy. The American Ryder Cup Team picked Tom Watson to captain at Gleneagles last month – he’ll be 65 when the event starts, making him the oldest to ever captain and the first repeat captain for the USA since 1987. He was also the last American to lead a Ryder Cup team to victory on the road in 1993 and knows how to win in the unpredictable Scottish weather.
The decision was announced in Abu Dhabi, before the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. Colin Montgomerie, Sandy Lyle, Paul Lawrie and Miguel Angel Jimenez were also considered for a 2014 captaincy. Montgomerie, who was the winning captain during the 2010 Ryder Cup, had earlier said it would be a dream to captain the team in his home country of Scotland.
