Anything can happen in matchplay golf – you can be playing some of your best golf and still lose a match. Yesterday was full of upsets, seeing some of the top ranked players in the world making early exits from the tournament, including Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods. The trend continued today as Luke Donald, the no. 3 seed in the tournament, lost to Scott Piercy 7 and 6. Losing by 7 and 6 is a margin known as a “dog license” in Donald’s native Britain. Back in the day, it used to cost 7 chillings and six pence! Louis Oosthuizen, Justin Rose and Jim Furyk were also eliminated.
There are still many big names in golf still competing in the tournament though! Bubba Watson, who said that “match play is not golf to me,” still has a chance to win the tournament after beating Jim Furyk in 22 holes. Graeme McDowell took Alex Noren to 20 holes for the win. Webb Simpson, defending champion Hunter Mahan, part time golfer Steve Stricker, Jason Day, Matt Kuchar, Martin Kaymer and Ian Poulter are also still in the tournament.
