Joe Miller: Training for Long Drive

We are only a day away from the Re/Max World Long Drive Championship in Las Vegas and many competitors have been training for this event for a long time. Among the competitors is 2010 Long Drive Champion, Joe Miller! The 29-year-old is currently the number one ranked long driver in the world and recently, Chris Murphy of CNN Living Golf paid him a visit during one of his training sessions!

In an obsessive pursuit of distance, Joe Miller’s intense training regiment revolves around his specially crafted equipment, gym workouts, coaching sessions and diet, which includes in-taking 6,000 calories a day. With a swing speed of 155 mph and a ball speed of 225 mph, Joe consistently bomb drives over 400 yards, with his longest drive in competition recorded at 474 yards. Below is a comparison of the distance of Joe’s drive to the Shard in London and the Empire State Building in New York.

With Joe and other long drivers such as Jamie Sadlowski pushing the limits of their bodies, it has further pushed manufacturers, such as their sponsor Callaway, to go through a bit of a learning curve in order to produce drivers that could withstand 200+ mph ball speed.
