The Open Championship this week is hosted on a golf course full of history, with Muirfield dating back to 1891. Fanling Golf Course in Hong Kong is the host of the annual Hong Kong Open and is the second-oldest course in the world outside Britain, after the Royal Calcutta Golf Club’s course in India. Now, there are fears that this historic golf course may be lost due to potential housing developments!
Hong Kong Golf Club is a three-course, 170-hectare facility. With such a dense population in Hong Kong, it is natural for the government to look for options in order to develop housing. However, this may be at the cost of the Fanling golf courses. With only 688 hectares of golf courses in Hong Kong in comparison to Singapore’s 1,500 hectares, there is already a limited amount of space for aspiring golfers to hone their games. If the Hong Kong Golf Club does indeed lose a course due to housing developments, the future of golf in Hong Kong will be dealt a devastating blow! Hong Kong may even lose its annual European Tour Event. We know it’s one of Rory McIlroy’s favorite tournament and it’s definitely one of ours!
