You may remember us featuring the first ever Masters Green Jacket, won by Horton Smith in 1934, going on sale through auction a couple of weeks ago. The current owners are Tom and Michael Lackovic, who inherited the Green Jacket through the death of their mother who married Horton Smith’s broken, Renshaw Smith.
They possessed a very rare piece of golf history and needless to say, it is probably the most anyone’s ever paid for a piece of golf memorabilia – and perhaps for a sports coat. Horton Smith’s Green Jacket sold for a record $629,229 through GreenJacketAuctions.com! The Masters Tournament began awarding Green Jackets to its Champions at the 1949 Masters when newly minted Champ Sam Snead and the 9 previous Masters Winners were first given their jackets. These “Original 10” Green Jackets are among the most coveted pieces of modern golf history, the bulk of which are owned by Augusta National Golf Club or the World Golf Hall of Fame.
