2020 US Open Champion: Bryson DeChambeau

Bryson DeChambeau made headlines in the past few months after transforming his body in pursuit of power and distance. There were no shortage of skeptics and doubters but at the end of US Open Sunday, Bryson had the last laugh. By implementing the bomb and gouge strategy, Bryson dominated the field to win his first major title by six strokes over second place, Matthew Wolff.

Ahead of the 2020 US Open, many experts predicted that hitting the fairways would be an integral recipe for success. However, Bryson would just hit 41% of fairways of the week at Winged Foot, and just 9 out of 28 fairways in the final two rounds. Not too many players envisioned the course to be played this way, including former US Open Champion, Rory McIlroy.

But the newest US Open Champion has never been shy about pushing the boundaries. From using the same length golf clubs to transforming his body, the Golf Scientist now plans to look into using a 48″ driver at the 2020 Masters to chase even more distance.

With all the talk and focus on distance, it should be noted that Bryson’s putting was on fire as well, having gained +2.99 strokes on the greens in comparison to the field. Whether you like or dislike Bryson’s way of golf, he’s getting results. What are your thoughts on the bomb and gouge strategy?
