Collin Morikawa Wins PGA Championship

What a bizarre year 2020 has been, but luckily, we have started to return to a new sort of normal with the return of professional sports. This past week, the 102nd PGA Championship was held at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, California, with no fans in attendance to adhere to social distancing protocols and to limit the spread of COVID-19. It was this season’s first Major Championship while in “normal” years, it would have concluded the Major Championship season.

The tournament did not disappoint though, with a packed leaderboard and big names ready to win. In the end, it was 23-year-old Collin Morikawa who hit the clutch shots to separate himself from the pack on Sunday. He secured his first Major Championship by shooting a 6-under 64 to finish the tournament at 13-under par. For the tournament, he put rounds of 69-69-65-65 together in impressive fashion, being 1st in proximity to the hole, 1st in driving accuracy and 1st in strokes gained: putting. In just his second Major Championship start, he won his first Major – and of his 27 professional starts, his third overall victory. The list of impressive accolades is plentiful.

It was a packed leaderboard at 10-under-par for most of the day with names such as Jason Day, Dustin Johnson and Paul Casey lurking and hoping to make a charge. Defending champion, Brooks Koepka, who was aiming for a 3peat, faded with a final round 74 after some questionable comments about his peers. The shot of the tournament that separated Morikawa from the pack was an eagle on the drivable par-4 16th. Watch the extended highlights above and check out an impressive win by an even more impressive player.
