2019 Player of the Year Rory McIlroy captured his third WGC (World Golf Championship) title at the 2019 WGC-HSBC Champions. He is the first European golfer to achieve this feat. This victory marked Rory’s fourth title in the calendar year, having won at the PLAYERS Championship, the RBC Canadian Open and the TOUR Championship, which helped him win his second FedEx Cup title as well!
After a sneaky T3 finish in Japan at the ZOZO Championship, where Tiger Woods won his 82nd PGA TOUR event, Rory came into the 2019 WGC-HSBC Champions tournament on fire. Through the tournament, Rory shot rounds of 67-67-67-68 to finish at 19-under par. This wasn’t enough though, as Rory needed to defeat Xander Schauffele in a playoff hole to capture his third WGC title and 18th PGA TOUR event.
For a breakdown of Rory’s year though, this tweet really says a lot… In addition to his on-course earnings, of the 23 events that Rory has played, he has 17 top-tens and only 2 missed cuts. Now that is some consistency – do you think he captures The Masters in 2020? Next stop though – Dubai!
McIlroy’s $27m on-course earnings in 2019 broken down:
$2.7m per month
$1.1m per start
$616k per week
$293k per round
$88k per day
