Brooks Koepka has added to his résumé once again. Despite feeling under the weather, Brooks toughed it out to shoot a final round 5-under 65 to win the 2019 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational by three shots. This is Brooks’ first WGC title and adds to his already impressive accolades, including back to back US Open titles in 2017 and 2018 as well as back to back PGA Championship titles in 2018 and 2019.
Heading into the final round, Brooks trailed 54-hole leader, Rory McIlroy, by one shot. Everyone was excited about this star-studded final pairing of Brooks and Rory. Unfortunately for Rory, even after shooting 62 in his third round, he was unable to build off the momentum and struggled to shoot 1-over 71 to finish T4 at TPC Southwind. After a disappointing performance at Royal Portrush last week, a victory here would’ve been a great bounce-back and would’ve added to an already impressive season of two victories at the PLAYERS and RBC Canadian Open.
The PGA Tour will travel to North Carolina next week for the Wyndham Championship. After that, the FedEx Cup playoffs will begin in a stretch of three straight tournaments, starting with the Northern Trust and followed by the BMW Championship and the TOUR Championship. With Brooks Koepka ranked number one in the FedEx Cup standings and the OWGR, and playing like it as well, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Brooks continue his domination.
