Rory McIlroy: Course Record 61 at Royal Portrush

It’s officially the week of the Open Championship and this year, golf’s oldest major championship returns to Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland for the first time since 1951. Royal Portrush was founded in 1888 and it’s very well-known among golf enthusiasts. However, in preparation for a major championship, the golf course was modernized with changes to the course as well as infrastructure installations. One thing remains the same though and that’s the course record, held by Rory McIlroy.

Rory McIlroy is one of the top golfers in the world. He is currently ranked number three in the world in the OWGR, with two victories under his belt this season, the RBC Canadian Open and the PLAYERS Championship. Although Rory came from humble beginnings as a young lad from Holywood, Northern Ireland, he would shock the golfing world as a 16 year old phenom in 2005 when he shot an incredible 11-under, 61 to break the course record at Royal Portrush! In the video above, Rory reminisces about his record breaking round. Perhaps, the good vibes from a familiar venue will propel Rory to his fifth career major championship this week and winning at home will make it that much more special!
