We’re officially in the 2019 PGA Championship week as this major championship move to its new date in May. Bethpage Black will be the host of the year’s second major championship and although it is a public course in the state of New York, it is famous for its difficulty. It is also highly regarded enough that it has twice hosted the FedEx Cup Playoff event, the Barclays and the US Open in 2002 and 2009. It will also host 2024 Ryder Cup and the Barclays again in 2021 and 2027.
In the video above, Golf Digest and senior architecture editor Ron Whitten gives us a flyover tour of Bethpage Black. We go hole-by-hole as we navigate the timeless layout and assess all the different challenges the best players in the world will face this week in the 101st PGA Championship. In addition to its difficult layout, the Black course at Bethpage will also play 7,436 yards from the championship tees (par 70).
After winning the Masters in dramatic fashion, Tiger Woods will look to capture his second major title this year as he continues his quest to break Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 career major championships. Having won the 2002 US Open at Bethpage Black bodes well for Tiger but he is no longer as dominant against the field as he was before. If you were a betting man / woman, who would you place your money on?
