Canadian Corey Connors has his first PGA Tour victory. After winning a 6-for-1 playoff on Monday to get into the tournament, Corey is now the fifth Monday qualifier to win on tour as he wins the 2019 Valero Texas Open. 2017 Players Champion Si Woo Kim had the lead at the beginning of the final day but with an up and down final round 6-under 66, Corey came out on top in the end.
Corey Connors began the final round on fire, making birdie on four of his first five holes. However, he would falter and make four straight bogeys to shoot even in his first nine holes. This stretch of holes could’ve ended his chances for his first victory on the PGA Tour but Corey was not to be denied. In his final nine holes at TPC San Antonio, Corey would make six birdies to finish at 20-under par and a two-shot victory. That’s a total of ten birdies in his final round!
With this victory, Corey has earned a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour and with Masters week officially beginning in a few hours, Corey will also be making a trip to Augusta National to compete in the year’s first major championship. This will be Corey’s second trip to the Masters as he had the opportunity to compete there after finishing runner up at the 2014 US Amateur.
