Francesco Molinari was overlooked at the beginning of the final day at the 2019 Arnold Palmer Invitational. But by the end of it, after finishing off his round in style to cap off an 8-under 64 final round, the reigning Open Champion had his third-career PGA Tour victory and his fourth worldwide victory in the past nine months.
Many fans thought the final round of the AP Invitational would be a battle between Matt Fitzpatrick and defending champion, Rory McIlroy. However, both players struggled to get anything going and Francesco’s final round vaulted him to the top of the leaderboard as he won the tournament by two shots. Francesco’s game has been on the upswing for a while and even new clubs from Callaway did not require an adjustment period from the Italian. From his Open Championship victory to his unreal performance at the 2018 Ryder Cup, Francesco has really put Italy on the map in the world of golf.
Next week, the PGA Tour will head to TPC Sawgrass for the PGA Tour’s flagship tournament and golf’s “fifth major” at the Players Championship. The change in schedule has the Players being played in March instead of May for the first time in twelve years. From what players are saying, the course plays very different due to different wind directions as well as softer conditions. It’ll be interesting to see the world’s top players adjust. Who do you think will come out on top?
