This past week, Taylormade Golf introduced their new Spider X Putter, which is a evolution of the Spider putter, made popular by Jason Day. The philosophy of the Spider X is to revolutionize optimal stability and alignment and this is achieved “by reengineering the mass properties of the head and introducing a new optically engineered True Path alignment system.”
The True Path alignment system aims to “help golfers visualize the intended target line for improved putting accuracy.” In addition, the Spider X putter will also feature upgraded stability by combining “a heavy (320g) steel frame with a lightweight (15g) carbon composite sole to provide extreme perimeter weighting in a more streamlined shape.”
A thicker Pure Roll insert can also be found in the Spider X putter. The white surlyn insert has been increased to 5 millimeters in thickness, which helps the putter produce better sound and feel. Roll characteristics are also improved through its 45° grooves as it “increases topspin to help the ball start and stay on its intended line.”
“First of all, I think the True Path alignment in this is going to be a huge help. Stability wise, you aren’t always going to have a perfect stroke, so if you can get something that gives more forgiveness and gets it rolling closer to the right starting line, it will make putting so much easier.”
— Rory McIlroy
Rory McIlroy, who has been infamous for his putting struggles the past few years, have already put the Spider X putter in his bag. With the Masters just over two months away, perhaps this new weapon from Taylormade will help Rory breakthrough and complete his career Grand Slam in April at Augusta National Golf Club!
The Spider X putter will be initially available copper/white and navy/white colorways. It will retail for $349.99 USD starting on February 15 in three lengths (33, 34 and 35 inches) and comes stock with a SuperStroke’s Pistol GTR 1.0 grip. Both left-handed and right-handed putters will be offered.
