Xander Schauffele Wins 2018 WGC-HSBC Champions

In the final round of the 2018 World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions, Xander Schauffele wins his third PGA TOUR event after outlasting Tony Finau in a playoff hole. The World Golf Championships – HSBC Champions was held at Sheshan International Golf Course in Shanghai, China. One of the best fields in golf was present, including past champion Dustin Johnson, 2018 U.S. Open and PGA Championship winner Brooks Koepka, and 2018 Masters winner Patrick Reed, along with 2018 Open Champion Francesco Molinari and four-time major winner Rory McIlroy. Newly crowned FedExCup champ Justin Rose was also in the field to defend his HSBC Champions title.

Schauffele gave the Americans a sweep of the World Golf Championships and quickly put a winless sophomore season behind him. He made birdie on his final three holes Sunday, the last one a two-putt birdie from about 30 feet on the par-5 18th hole to beat Tony Finau in a sudden-death playoff and win the HSBC Champions. He began the tournament by celebrating his 25th birthday. He ended it with one clutch shot after another in the closing stretch at Sheshan International for a 4-under 68, the lowest score of the final round, and his first victory in 13 months.

Schauffele won twice in his first year on the PGA TOUR to win Rookie of the Year, finishing third in the 2017 FedExCup — the highest finish by a rookie. Last season featured high finishes, but only one good chance at winning when he was a runner-up in The Open Championship at Carnoustie. He also was runner-up at THE PLAYERS Championship, finishing four shots back of Webb Simpson. Now Schauffele has three victories, the last two at the TOUR Championship to end the 2017 season and now a World Golf Championship.
