The 2015 US Open was held at Chambers Bay Golf Course in Tacoma, Washington. Our team at 18UnderPar have played the course numerous of times and really enjoyed our experience. However, despite the thrilling finish at the US Open, most people had a bad impression of the greens at the Robert Trent Jones II designed golf course. Jordan Spieth and his caddie, Michael Greller, probably had no complaints as Jordan’s victory at Chambers Bay was one of many in an incredible season.
Chambers Bay could never escape the reputation it developed at the 2015 US Open. Rather than fight it, the golf course has been proactive in addressing the issue in order to improve play on its greens. With the 2021 US Amateur Four-Ball Championship returning to the Pacific Northwest, perhaps the US open will also return to Chambers Bay in the future.
The turf-grass transition project started off on a few greens but this fall, all the greens will be trading its fine fescue grass for new poa annua grass. This is a huge undertaking and the course is schedule to reopen in the Spring of 2019. Our team plan to visit the course when it reopens and you can be sure we’ll let you know how the new greens play!
