When one thinks of sports in Italy, golf isn’t the first thing that comes to mind as the country is obsessed with football (soccer) and motor racing. However, Francesco Molinari became the first Italian professional golfer to win a major title when he won the 2018 Open Championship at Carnoustie. A victory of this magnitude certainly warrants some attention and with the country already warming up to the sport of golf, it may even speed up the process.
In this episode of CNN Living Golf with Shane O’Donoghue, we explore the state of golf in Italy as we hear from the Molinari brothers and visit the European Tour event, the Italian Open. Shane also takes us back to the history of golf in the country, speaking with Italian great Costantino Rocca. With Italy hosting the 2022 Ryder Cup at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club and a major Italian winner in Francesco Molinari, the future of golf in Italy is bright!
