The Players Championship is often considered golf’s fifth major, based on the strength of its field. It is played at the headquarters of the PGA Tour, TPC Sawgrass, which is most well-known for its iconic 17th island green. Although the 17th hole is only listed at 137 yards, it is a challenging hole, even for the pros.
The island green is often the pivotal point where the results of the Players Championship gets decided. Before Jason Day won the tournament last year, Rickie Fowler was the champion and he birdied the hole three times en route to his second PGA Tour victory.
In this episode of EPSN Sport Science, John Brenkus explores what makes the 17th at TPC Sawgrass, a Pete Dye design, so difficult. There are various factors and we examine them in the video above.
