Preview: 2017 Genesis Open

The PGA TOUR tees it up at historic Riviera Country Club for the 2017 Genesis Open where 20 of the top 30 players in the FedEx Cup standings are in the field. This includes recent winners in Hideki Matsuyama (WM Phoenix Open), Jordan Spieth (AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am) and Sergio Garcia (Omega Dubai Desert Classic). World Number 1 Jason Day will also be competing, returning to Riviera for the first time since 2012, as well as defending champion Bubba Watson.

The biggest news of late is regarding tournament host Tiger Woods. Woods, who made his return to the PGA TOUR and competed at the Farmers Insurance Open (missed cut) and Omega Dubai Desert Classic (withdrawn), has recently suffered from back spasms. Although he was planning on competing here, he’ll be limited to host duties this week. Whether he plays or not, this is a very important tournament for Tiger as The Tiger Woods Foundation is the tournament’s primary beneficiary this year, directing proceeds to the Earl Woods Scholarship Program and other TWF college-access initiatives in Southern California
