Justin Thomas Wins 2017 Sony Open

Justin Thomas had two phenomenal weeks in Hawaii to start the 2017 calendar year on the PGA TOUR. After winning the SBS Tournament of Champions, Thomas opened the Sony Open with a 59, becoming the seventh player to shoot the score and the youngest person to do so at the age of 23. This set him up for strong week where he set the lowest 72-hole score in TOUR history at 253 and a back-to-back victory for his fourth title. He is the only golfer to win both Hawaii tournaments to start a PGA Tour season other than Ernie Els in 2003. Els finished a combined 47 under that week. Thomas finished 49 under this week. Jordan Spieth, a good friend of Thomas’, was 35 under at the two Hawaii tournaments and lost by a combined 14 strokes.

Justin Thomas closed out his dominant two-tournament stretch in Hawaii with a 65 on Sunday. His score of 253 beats the mark of 254 set by Tommy Armour III at the 2003 Texas Open. Thomas finished at 27 under for the four-day event and won by seven over Justin Rose. He also set the lowest 36-hole scoring record (123) and tied the 54-hole record (188) throughout the week. Thomas has now won three times in his last five starts and moves to a career-best eighth in the Official World Golf Rankings. 2017 is already shaping up to be a great year with more young rising stars in Justin Thomas and Hideki Matsuyama as well as the return of Tiger Woods!
