After visiting with Open Champion Henrik Stenson at Lake Nona and exploring Carnegie Club at Skibo Castle, CNN Living Golf takes us a few miles away to Royal Dornoch Golf Club. Royal Dornoch is celebrating 400 years of golf this year and in this segment, we take a look at the history of the golf course and why Golf Digest has rated it the fifth best golf course in the world in 2016.
To get a firsthand look, Shane O’Donoghue plays a round at the championship course with Royal Dornoch’s head professional, Andrew Skinner. Although Old Tom Morris is credited as the course architect of this classic links design, it’s another architect, Donald Ross, who is as much associated with the club.
Considered the Michelangelo of golf, Ross was estimated to have helped designed over 400 golf courses in the United States in the first half of the 20th century, which includes the famous Pinehurst No.2. The influence of Dornoch on all Ross’ designs are apparent on the golf courses and it has surely influenced some of the top golf course designers today.
