The PGA TOUR held its season opener this past weekend and saw Brendan Steele rally down the stretch to finish with three-straight birdies to reach 18-under-par to claim his second career PGA TOUR title.
Last year, he held a 54-hole lead at Silverado but ended up shooting 40 on the back nine and threw the tournament away. This time, he entered the final round four-shots back but focused his way to a victory. The course was soaked, which gave way to a lot of chances and a lot of scoring – Steele shot 7-under 65 to win by one shot over Patton Kizzire. This was his first victory in 141 starts on the PGA TOUR dating back to his rookie season when he won the Valero Texas Open.
“You’ve got to really make something happen, especially when the conditions are soft,” Steele said. “I wanted to be aggressive and I didn’t want to just kind of coast in and just make sure that I had a decent week.”
He had a great week, which sends him back to the Masters for the first time since 2012. Another player to keep track of is Paul Casey, who has finished no worse than fourth in his last four tournaments dating to the FedExCup Playoffs. You can bet that he’ll be holding up a trophy soon.
