2016 Ryder Cup: A History Lesson

From September 27 to October 2, 2016, the 41st Ryder Cup will be held at Hazeltine National Golf Club. Team Europe is the defending champion from Gleneagles in 2014 and has dominated the biannual event in recent times. They have won eight of the last ten contests and ten of the last fifteen encounters. The last time Team USA won was in 2008 and in an attempt to get back to winning ways, the Americans have put together a task force for the 2016 Ryder Cup.

Ahead of this year’s competition, CNN Living Golf and its host, Shane O’Donoghue previews the event by reflecting on its history. In addition to looking at why the tournament stirs up so much rivalry, we also hear from Tony Jacklin, captain of the 1985 European Ryder Cup team.

Tony Jacklin changed the role of captain in the Ryder Cup forever as it is no longer viewed as a ceremonial role but one of extreme importance in strategy and planning. At Hazeltine, Davis Love III and Darren Clarke will captain the American and European teams respectively. Watch part one of CNN Living Golf’s Ryder Cup preview in the video above!
