It’s been a fairly indifferent year for Rory McIlroy this year – he seems to have been struggling with his game for a while, particularly his putting, as he has acknowledged. Although his game hasn’t been in the best place, he has put together a multi-win season, first at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open and most recently at the Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston, his first PGA TOUR win since May 2015.
Ever since Nike Golf has announced their exiting of the golf hard goods industry, Rory has switched over to a Scotty Cameron M1 Prototype by Titleist – just last week, he even switched putting coaches. The new changes seem to be working as he put together an amazing four rounds with scores of 71-67-66-65. He started the final round six shots behind the lead, but seven birdies on the round (lowest score of the day) saw him finish two shots clear at 15-under par.
“I knew my game was in good shape, I just needed to do something with the putting,” said McIlroy. “I found something. I still need to keep going with it, it’s definitely not the finished article, but it’s a big step in the right direction. I’m excited with how my game is and what I’ve found this week, and hopefully I can keep it going for the next couple of tournaments, but ultimately into the Ryder Cup.”
With this win, Rory is now fourth in the FedEx Cup standings. He’ll advance to next week’s BMW Championship, where the field will be reduced to 30 for the Tour Championship from September 22 to 25. What a time to figure out his game with the TOUR Championship coming up as well as the Ryder Cup – watch out for Rory in the coming few weeks!
