The first tournament of the FedEx Cup Playoffs has concluded and it would be Patrick Reed who survived Bethpage Black to win The Barclays. But it was two victories that Reed picked up on Sunday though, also playing his way into an automatic spot on this year’s Ryder Cup team. He was on the bubble at eighth on the automatic spots, but this win bumped him up to fourth. Watch highlights above from Reed’s latest win!
“Everyone’s been talking about the Ryder Cup, been talking about, `Oh, you’re in the eighth spot and you’re on the bubble’ and all that,” Reed said after his one-shot victory. “If you go and win, it takes care of everything else. … It takes care of everything.”
The biggest story is perhaps Rickie Fowler, who started Sunday with a one shot lead. He needed to finish solo third or higher to get an automatic spot on the Ryder Cup team. He was two shots behind the lead with four holes to play — and two shots clear of third place — until finishing with bogey-double bogey-birdie-bogey and a final round 74 to finish T7. He’ll face a couple weeks of uncertainty as to whether or not he’ll be joining Reed at Hazeltine this year as one of four captain’s pick.
Currently, the US Ryder Cup team consists of Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed, Jimmy Walker, Brooks Koepka, Brandt Snedeker and Zach Johnson. Captain Davis Love has four wildcard picks and will choose three after the BMW Championship on 11 September and his final selection two weeks later after the Tour Championship, only five days before the Ryder Cup starts on September 30.
