Like Jason Day last year, Johnattan Vegas closed his final round on Sunday with a string of three birdies in a row to secure his second PGA TOUR title. Vegas, a Venezuela native, shot a 12-under par total at the RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club including a final round 8-under par 64. This win qualifies him to compete at the PGA Championship this week.
“It’s incredible,” Vegas said of earning his second career PGA Tour win. “It’s a fun feeling. This is what you train for, this is what you spend every moment at home for. I’m just super excited.”
It was a very strong week for Vegas, averaging 323.5 yards off the tee and finishing second overall in strokes gained from tee to green. Dustin Johnson, the reigning US Open Champion, also played extremely well, but was only able to shoot a 3-under par round to finish one stroke back of Vegas at 11-under par. He is still playing some solid golf though, so look for him to be in contention this week at Baltusrol for the PGA Championship.
