After exploring Royal Troon, the venue for the 145th Open Championship, Shane O’Donoghue and CNN Living Golf travels down the road to Prestwick, a town that has hosted the first 12 Open Championships from 1860 to 1872.
Prestwick Golf Club is just 4 miles away from Royal Troon and it was founded in 1851. The course was designed by one of the founding fathers of golf, Old Tom Morris, and it was integral in the creation of the Open Championship. Before the Claret Jug, the Champion Golfer of the Year would win the Challenger Belt, a “trophy” that was paid for by the members of Prestwick Golf Club.
In the second part of this CNN Living Golf episode, we take a look at the history of Prestwick Golf Club and the legacy of its founder, Old Tom Morris. Tommy’s Honor, a movie based on golf’s founding father and his son, premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and we also get a behind the scenes look in this episode.
