The 116th US Open returns to Oakmont Country Club this year. It is the ninth time that the national championship will be held at this historic golf course and no other place has hosted the tournament more. Ahead of the year’s second Major, CNN Living Golf travels to the East Coast of the United States to preview the 2016 US Open.
Oakmont Country Club is often considered as one of the greatest and most difficult golf courses in the world. Although it’s inland, the course is wide open and its undulating topography reminds golfers of a seaside links course. However, this similarity was an accident and designer Henry Fownes built the course as he found it in 1903.
Among the many historical moments at Oakmont was the 1962 US Open. Many consider this tournament to be the starting point of where the rivalry between the King, Arnold Palmer and the Golden Bear, Jack Nicklaus, truly began. Watch the video above as Shane O’Donoghue and CNN Living Golf gives us an introduction to Oakmont and takes us through some of its history.
