In early March, a Rio 2016 golf test event was held at the Gil Hanse-designed Olympic golf course. This will mark the first time golf will be played in the Summer Olympics in over 100 years and it is hoped that its increased exposure will help the sports’ popularity, especially in immature golf markets.
Gil Hanse has been highly praised for his work on Castle Stuart, a new course in Scotland. Although the Olympic golf course has a links feel, its strongest influence was from the sandbelt courses in Australia, such as Royal Melbourne Golf Club. In the video above, Golfing World takes us behind the scenes at the Rio 2016 golf test event as we hear from Gil Hanse among many others.
