Tony Finau, 26, won his first PGA TOUR title this weekend at the Puerto Rico Open at Coco Beach Golf and Country Club in a three hole playoff against Steve Marino. Finau would birdie all three playoff holes to capture his first title. Finau and Marino each shot 2-under 70 in the final round to finish at 12-under par.
“In regulation, it was a putt that I kind of dreamed of making my whole life,” Finau said. “It’s a putt that you practice for your first PGA TOUR victory or just for any PGA TOUR victory, so I was a little bit bummed that that sneaked by the hole because I hit a really good putt. But I was happy I had another chance at it and was able to make the second one.”
Finau is a former Utah high school basketball star and is the cousin of Milwaukee Bucks player Jabari Parker. He is a Nike Golf athlete and part of a group of new generation golfers who are extremely athletic while also bringing their personal style onto the golf course. Ian Poulter was also in the mix, starting the final round with a one-shot lead. He hasn’t won on the PGA TOUR since 2012 and closed with a 72, just one stroke out of the playoff.
