In 1966, founder Karsten Solheim revolutionized putter design with the invention of the Anser. The PING Anser has really stood the test of time and has become one of the most iconic designs in golf history.
Now, 50 years later, the new Anser and Anser 2 models advance his groundbreaking putter technology and celebrate Solheim’s popular head design. The new TR 1966 Anser and Anser 2 were created using 3D scans of the original Anser and Anser 2 models to analyze the contours and radius details that were shaped into the initial designs with the help of a mill and hand files.
“Karsten’s groundbreaking Anser design was genius because of how well it performed and how different it was,” said John Solheim, PING’s Chairman & CEO. “Golfers had never seen anything like it. He hand-shaped every detail of it until it was perfect in his mind. The Anser changed putter design forever, and it still influences putter manufacturers worldwide 50 years later because of its unparalleled success and popularity.”
Perimeter-weighted for forgiveness, the new models feature True-Roll face technology, which delivers unmatched ball-speed consistency, the key to holing more putts and reducing 3-putts. By varying the depth of the grooves across the face — with the deepest grooves in the center and getting gradually shallower toward the perimeter to equalize ball speed — they improve distance control on center-hit and mis-hit putts off the heel or toe.
Like the original Anser, the 340-gram TR 1966 Anser includes a sound slot in the sole — the slot is placed in the wall of the cavity — that sometimes produces a firmer feel. The slot can also give the putter a louder sound at impact. Each Anser head is made from 17-4 stainless steel and has a rounded heel, toe contours and slightly thicker top line. The putter is offered in a manganese bronze PVD finish.
Created from 17-4 stainless steel, the 340-gram The TR 1966 Anser 2 is also 340-grams and created from 17-4 stainless steel. It is distinguished by a silver blast finish and single white alignment line on the flange that helps with alignment. The heel and toe contours are less rounded than Anser, and the top line has been narrowed.
Both TR 1966 putters retail for USD $162.50 and come standard with a 35-inch stepped shaft and PP58 midsize black grip.
