Earlier in the month, Cobra Golf introduced their most technologically advanced driver in the King LTD, their new flagship driver. With that announcement also came the rest of the King LTD collection including fairway woods and forged irons (MB, CB and Tec). Most recently, they have also introduced another offering of metalwoods, the Cobra King F6 and F6+, which aim to replace the Fly-Z and Fly-Z+ drivers from last year as well as new F6 irons.
KING F6+
With the new King F6 line, Cobra is expanding the CG adjustability found in the Fly-Z and Fly-Z+ drivers (FlipZone) into the new driver and fairway woods. The new King F6+ drivers are equipped with the most adjustability the company has to offer. It features an 18-gram sliding weight on a front-to-back carbon-fiber track (CarbonTrac). By building the track’s foundation out of 100 percent carbon fiber, Cobra was able reduce the weight of the structure by 8 grams compared to an all-titanium construction. The crown of the driver is also made from carbon fiber, a structure that the company says is 12 grams lighter than its titanium equivalent. According to Cobra, the King F6+ offers the most drastic changes in front-to-back center of gravity (CG) adjustability — 6 millimeters front to back and 600 rpm of spin — and has the lowest CG of any adjustable driver on the market.
While the FlipZone adjustability in the previous generation Fly-Z+ driver allowed golfers to move CG forward and backward, there was only a front and back setting available. With the King F6+’s sliding weight track, it offers golfers nine different CG options while significantly lowering CG and raising moment of inertia (MOI). The F6+’s body is made from Ti 811, a material that’s lighter and stronger than the titanium used in the Fly-Z+, saving 6 grams in total. A new Speed Channel helps save 1.5 – 2 grams on the club face and is 10 to 15 percent better on off-center hits, according to Cobra.
However, a heel or toe weight is not available on the King F6+ which might affect players who want a more draw or fade bias driver. To address this issue though, Cobra’s MyFly hosel allows golfers to adjust loft and lie angle with eight different positions including three draw-biased settings, which make the driver more upright. The King F6+ comes in an F6+ Pro head too, which is essentially the same driver with less loft. It will feature a fade-biased lie angle setting instead of draw setting.
KING F6
The King F6 driver is made for golfers who need more forgiveness, higher launch and higher spin. With two interchangeable weights — 10 grams and 3 grams — golfers will still have the ability to adjust center of gravity (CG) to dial in spin rate and launch angle, but the main draw of the King F6 is its ease of use. The King F6 fairway woods will mark the first time Cobra offers a fairway wood with CG adjustability. Each fairway wood has two weights – 20 grams and 3 grams – which affect launch angle and spin rate by more than 200 rpm. Positioning the heavier weight forward will create a more penetrating, lower-spinning flight, while positioning the heavier weight rearward will make the fairway wood slightly more forgiving and raise launch and spin.
The faces of the F6 fairway woods are made from 475 stainless steel, which Cobra claims are 30 percent stronger than the 465 stainless used in the previous generation Fly-Z and Fly-Z+. This, in combination with the new weighting system allows the King F6 fairway woods to be longer than it’s predecessors in carry and total distance. New King F6 hybrids are also offered, featuring a 13-gram weight in the back portion of the sole, driving weight down and back. They also feature a thin, 455 stainless steel club faces designed for maximum ball speed across the face.
KING F6 IRONS
The new King F6 irons are engineered throughout the set to optimize performance for each individual iron. The King F6 irons has a progressive design that Cobra calls “TecFlo,” which stands for Technology Enhanced Cavity, Feel (and) Launch Optimization. Basically, the long irons, mid irons and short irons each use a different type of construction to alter launch conditions.
The F6 Long irons (3-5) have a full-hollow design with face inserts to deliver low CG and a highly responsive face. The result is a long iron that flies further and is easier to hit. The F6 mid irons (6-7) have a half-hollow design with an extremely thin face. Additional discretionary weight is added to produce optimal CG positioning. These technologies product mid irons that are easy to hit and extremely accurate. The scoring irons (8-9) have a traditional cavity back design with low and further back CG position. The result is more spin and added shot control enabling golfers to attach the Pin. Finally, the F6 speciality wedge design (PW, SW) adds versatility and precision around the greens and in bunkers. Ideal for getting up and down.
Overall, the entire KING F6 collection of golf clubs are one of the most innovative offerings for the new year. The clubs from Cobra Golf seem to get better and better each year, and with a star in Rickie Fowler, their future looks bright together!
