Perhaps the biggest news that dominated the week of the Hero World Challenge was that of Tiger Woods and the uncertainty around his return to competitive golf. It was definitely the story of the week before his Hero World Challenge started – we hope to see him back competing again soon.
Once round 1 started though, we were able to watch one of the best field’s in golf compete for the Tiger trophy. Bubba Watson, who wasn’t even planning to play in the Hero World Challenge, filled in for Jason Day, who withdrew to spend more time with his family and newborn daughter. Bubba’s length off the tee allowed him to score on Albany’s five par-5 holes throughout the week, finishing the tournament at 25-under par, one shot off from Jordan Spieth’s record last year at Isleworth, to claim his ninth PGA TOUR victory.
Entering the final round with a two shot lead, Watson made four birdies in seven holes and was never seriously challenged. He shot a final round 6-under 66 for a three shot victory over Patrick Reed. Other golfers who made a run on the final day included defending champion, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and Paul Casey. Justin Rose set a new course record with a final round 62.
“I guess I’ve got to thank Jason Day for backing out. I have to thank the U.S. government and passport office for getting Dakota a passport so we could be here.” – Bubba Watson
Watson left the Bahamas with a $1 million payoff and a firm grasp on No. 4 in the world the rest of the year. Even if it didn’t feel easy to him, it sure looked that way. Watson didn’t make a bogey all weekend until the final hole, when he jokingly asked NBC field reporter Notah Begay how many shots he needed to win. He played it safe and made bogey, and all that cost him was the tournament record. The Hero World Challenge marks the end of the year for most players, but not for Watson – he is now headed to Asia for the Thailand Open. Take a look at the highlights from his victory above!
