After visiting Napa and the Monterey Peninsula before making their way down the West Coast through Malibu and Los Angeles, CNN Living Golf and Shane O’Donoghue finally arrive at Carlsbad in Southern California. This small city is arguably the centre of the global golf industry and in the final segment of this episode, we explore the city’s roots and its current landscape.
Callaway, Taylormade and Cobra-Puma are all within close proximity of each other in Carlsbad, California. However, it was Ely Callaway, who virtually invented the modern golf equipment industry, who started it all when he moved his company to the area in the late 1980s.
His goal was to take advantage of a fading aerospace industry based nearby as he hired local talent who understood how to use new material, such as titanium. After intense R&D, these engineers developed the first over-sized metal driver in the Big Bertha and from that point on, the golf industry was never the same. Watch as CNN Living Golf takes us through this golf industry mecca!
