We witnessed a deja vu of the 2012 Ryder Cup at Medinah Golf Club this weekend during the 2015 Solheim Cup. It wasn’t a European Team staging a comeback, but rather an extremely motivated and pumped up American Team. After a controversial call during one of the remaining four-ball matches Sunday Morning, Team USA won nine of the 12 singles matches and overcame the largest deficit (four points) in Solheim Cup history, starting the day down 10-6 and ultimately defeating Team Europe 14.5-13.5 at St. Leon-Rot Golf Club in Germany.
The controversial call occurred at the 17th hole in the four-ball match between Suzann Pettersen and Charley Hull vs. Alison Lee and Brittany Lincicome, two rookies of the Solheim Cup. Lee had a 12-foot birdie to win the hole and barely missed, leaving herself about a foot left for par. With the European players walking off the green and thinking she heard the putt was conceded, Lee picked up the ball, only to have Pettersen argue that the putt was not conceded. This left Lee and Lincicome 1 down in the match and flustered heading into the final hole of their match, which they would lose 2 down, giving Team Europe their 10th point. The golf world was outraged with the situation, but see the whole thing unfold below and you decide what was right or wrong.
The situation definitely fired up Team USA for their singles matches. Although they started out slow, more and more American players started to gain momentum in their matches, particularly 2014 US Women’s Open Champion, Michelle Wie. Wie, who has had a forgettable, injury-plagued year, stormed out of the gates with five birdies in her first six holes. She would win her match 6&4. Alison Lee would redeem herself from the mornings controversy with a 3&1 victory in her match. One after another, points were being won by Team USA and the greatest comeback in Solheim Cup history was complete.
In the video above, watch highlights from the competition from Golf Channel! Now hopefully the men’s USA team can be inspired to bring home the Ryder Cup next year at Hazeltine – but first, the Presidents Cup in South Korea against a red hot, World Number 1, Jason Day and Team International!
