TaylorMade Golf just held a media event to announce their new equipment for the upcoming season. We’ve seen leaked photos of the new driver, but today, it was officially announced – for 2016, TaylorMade Golf staff will be using the new M1 driver. TaylorMade claims that the M1 is their longest driver ever made and features multi-material construction with an ultra-thin, ultra-light and high-strength carbon composite crown that unlocks breakthroughs in distance, playability and feel for all golfers.
The “M” in M1 stands for Multi-Material. The driver is constructed with a 7-layer Carbon Composite Crown that is precision-formed and built ultra-thin, ultra-light and high strength to maximize weight savings. By saving weight in one place, engineers were able to redistribute it to other areas of the club – with this crown, TaylorMade has built a weight-loaded sole and moves overall clubhead weight (and centre-of-gravity) even lower for a more efficient power transfer for more ball speed.
The Carbon Composite Crown also allows golfers to have 25 grams of multi-directional adjustability using the T-Track System, allowing them to personalize launch conditions, fit to their swing, to optimize ball-flight, trajectory and distance.
The T-Track System uses both a Front and Back track with 25 grams of adjustable weight. The front track features one 15-gram weight to provide multiple draw, neutral and fade settings. The back track features one 10-gram weight enabling golfers to adjust for multiple high, medium and low launch and spin settings. It really gives golfers the option to personalize their M1 to their exact specifications, leading to optimal performance and distance to fit their swing. A loft sleeve is also offered and gives golfers the ability to change loft by 4 degrees (+/- 2 degrees) with 12 different positions to customize face angle, loft and lie.
The M1 driver will be available in lofts of 8.5, 9.5, 10.5 and 12 degrees and will come in 460cc and 430cc models with three after-market stock shafts (high launch, fujikura pro 60, mid launch mitsubishi kurakage tiny silver 60, low launch aldila rogue silver 70). You should be able to see these in stores starting October 8, 2015.
The M1 fairway woods were also announced and also uses the same carbon crown to lower CG for optimal launch conditions and speed with every shot. Unlike the driver though, the M1 fairway wood does not utilize the T-Track system, but it uses a split 30g (two 15-gram) sliding weights on a front track system, similar to the R15 driver. The M1 Rescue features a tour-inspired shape that enables better playability from more lies – two movable weights (one 3-gram and one 25-gram) allow for a neutral or fade bias to dial in trajectory for distance and consistency.
