Cobra Golf announced their latest collection of golf clubs this week with their King line up. The company brings back familiarity with the name and has made a splash with their new King LTD drivers offered in standard and pro models, though both use the same head design. The difference is in the loft and lie settings. The King LTD has lofts between 9 and 11.5 degrees with more upright “draw settings,” while the King LTD Pro has lofts between 7 and 10 degrees with flatter “fade” settings. Both drivers come stock with Aldila’s Rogue Black 60 shaft (R, S and X flexes) and Lamkin’s UTX grip.
The King LTD drivers ($449) feature a new SpacePort design that allows a clear look into the internal design of the clubhead. This driver was designed with the help of THe Centre for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS) and a materials science research study that took place on the International Space Station. The SpacePort design in the sole was even inspired by the Space Station’s observation platform!
The SpacePort consists of a removable 16 gram Aerospace grade aluminum dual-purpose translucent weight, held in place by their Spiralock thread technology which can hold up to the abuse of any golf swing without ever loosening. Once the port is removed though, players will be able to see all the technology that has been put into the King LTD – the 811 Titanium E9 face and body, the low CG hosel and “Textreme” carbon fiber crown.
Textreme is 20% stronger than standard carbon fiber, which allows Cobra to make the crown thinner and lighter on the King LTD driver. This combination of the SpacePort sole weight and lightweight crown gives the King LTD driver one of the lowest and deepest CG’s for a driver, improving launch and spin conditions.
“The KING COBRA franchise is synonymous with the brands’ heritage. Now, the new KING LTD driver is the next generation of product under the KING COBRA name, building upon the legacy created by COBRA Founder, Tom Crow, in 1990,” said Tom Olsavsky, VP Research & Development COBRA Golf. “We knew that if we were going to reintroduce the KING Cobra it had to be something much more advanced and special, incorporating innovative technologies that would only surpass its’ legacy. And we are confident we did that with the KING LTD driver; it is truly game-changing for golfers and fit for a KING.”
In total, Cobra claims that the new design elements allocate 28 grams of additional weight to be redistributed lower and deeper in the clubhead, creating a higher moment of inertia (MOI) as well as a lower CG. According to the company, the King LTD driver marks the first time a driver has achieved a CG below the “neutral axis,” a perpendicular line extending rearward from the geometric center of the club face.
In addition to the driver, Cobra also announced the King LTD Fairway Woods ($299) and King Forged TEC, CB/MB combo irons. The fairway woods offer the performance of the King LTD driver, but in your wood. Distance with forgiveness and solid feel. It is a mid-sized fairway wood featuring Textreme Carbon Fiber Crown with a removable SpacePort design. Fairway woods are available in two models: 3-4 (13-15.5 degrees) and 5-7 (16-18.5 degrees) with Aldila’s Rogue Black 60 shaft (R, S and X flexes).
The King collection of irons are some of the best looking irons we’ve seen. While the TEC irons are suited for golfers interested in a forged set of irons that can deliver more distance and forgiveness (similar to the JPX850 Forged), the King Forged CB/MB combo targets better players that seek distance control, shot shaping ability and versatility.
The King Forged CB/MB combo irons ($1,099) will be sold as CB from 3 to 6 irons and MB from 7 to GW. They are made using 1025 carbon steel with a five-step forging process. Both models feature tungsten weight plugs in the toe section of the clubs to move the CG closer to the centre of the club face, giving these irons more forgiveness. They are finished with a “diamonized” black finish, which is extremely sexy, and offers a non-glare look. The King Forged CB/MB Combo irons come stock with KBS’ C-Taper shafts (R, S and X flexes) and Lamkin’s UTX grips.
The TEC irons stand for Technology Enhanced Cavity with the feel and precision of a tour iron and the forgiveness and distance desired by all. The iron heads use five different materials (bodies forged from 1025 carbon steel) to offer golfers these features which wouldn’t be possible in a one-piece construction. The J15 Forged Stainless Steel club faces add forgiveness and ball speed to the design while tunsten weights in the sole push the CG lower and deeper for improved launch conditions and forgiveness. Carbon fiber badging and TPU inserts are used in the cavities to improve mass and feel. The King Forged TEC irons ($1099) come stock with KBS’ C-Taper Lite steel shafts (R, S, X flexes) and UST Mamiya’s Recoil 95 graphite shafts (F3, F4 and F5 flexes) with Lamkin’s UTX grips.
We’re very excited about the launch of the new King collection of equipment by Cobra Golf. Their Fly-Z drivers last year were extremely impressive and we can only expect them to improve on their previous innovations. The King LTD drivers, fairway woods and King Forged irons will be available starting October 1, 2015 and in stores starting November 13, 2015.
