Sunday Conversation: Jason Day

Jason Day finally broke through for his first Major Championship win this past weekend at Whistling Straits for the 2015 PGA Championship. After coming so close this year, Day closed out the tournament and broke records enroute to this victory – and after tapping in on the 72nd hole, he was filled with emotion.

At 12 years old, Day’s father died of stomach cancer and his mother needed to take out a second mortgage on the house and borrow money from his aunt and uncle to put him in a golf academy seven hours away. His mother had to use a knife to cut the lawn because she couldn’t afford to fix the mower, and she’d have heat up three or four kettles so Day could take a shower in a home that didn’t have a hot water tank. With all this happening at home, Day often got into fights and started drinking before he was even a teenager.

It’s an amazing story of resilience and determination. Day is one of the nicest people we’ve ever met and there might not be another golfer more deserving of a Major Championship that him. His journey started from as a lower-income, troubled child to a champion who would become the first man in golfing history to finish a major at 20 under par. In the video above, watch the Sunday Conversation interview between Day and ESPN Golf’s Tom Rinaldi.
