Shane Lowry of Ireland captured the biggest win of his career and his first PGA TOUR victory this past weekend with a two-shot victory at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club in Ohio. He began the final day in third, two shots behind co-leaders Justin Rose and Jim Furyk, but finished the day with a round of 66 and 11-under par for the tournament. Take a look at the highlights of the tournament above.
Lowry, who is currently ranked 48 in the world, won the Irish Open as an amateur in 2009. With this win, he earns a three-year exemption on the PGA Tour for his victory in the co-sanctioned event. Final pair Rose and Furyk struggled throughout the final day. Rose, who shot a 63 on Saturday, missed a series of short putts while Furyk, who finished in T3, recorded his 10th top-10 finish at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. He’s now failed to win 10 tournaments in succession in which he led or shared the lead after 54 holes.
Another story line was Jordan Spieth, who could have replaced Rory McIlroy atop of the Official Golf World Rankings with a win, but that was not to be. He’ll head into this week’s Major Championship, the PGA Championship, playing the first two days with defending champion, Rory McIlroy and 2015 Open Champion, Zach Johnson. Will we see a new number one by Sunday?
