Mizuno Golf: S5 Wedges

Mizuno Golf S5 Wedge

Earlier in the week, we featured the new Mizuno Golf MP-5 and MP-25 irons. Joining these new irons for 2015 are the Mizuno Golf S5 wedges (“S” for silhouette). We’ve seen the S5 wedges in the bag of Luke Donald for the past couple of months, but it’s not until recently that we were able to find out the specs of these new wedges.

The perception of Mizuno is that the company is a bit traditionalist – they’ve definitely challenged that this year, releasing a Mizuno Blue golf club in the JPX 850 driver and now a “Blue IP” S5 wedge. The new Mizuno Blue finish definitely allows the JPX 850 driver and the new S5 wedges to stand out on the golf course and the floor shelves. The company is really trying to make the Mizuno brand synonymous with the colour blue. But for more traditionalists, the S5 wedges will also be available in a White Satin finish.

The S5 wedges offer “unprecedented levels of greenside performance” – they both look great and perform great, giving the perfect blend of feel, control and workability. Similar to the irons, the wedges are forged from the company’s 1025E Grain Flow Forged Carbon Steel. The biggest compliment paid to them was that Luke Donald put the S5 wedges straight into his bag at the BMW PGA Championships at Wentworth earlier this summer, with the designs made to meet the needs of everyone from the top tour pro to mid-handicapper.

“These S5 wedges are more of a midsize profile, so there’s a lot more clubface for fuller shots,” says Chris Voshall, Mizuno club engineer. “They’re less intimidating when you’re faced with 95 yards from a less-than-perfect lie. They went straight into Luke’s bag in May, which suggests we did a pretty good job with the sole grinds and versatility around the greens.”

In terms of size, the S5 wedges fit in between the current MP-T5 and JPX wedges. Highly versatile sole grinds are offered to allow golfers to use their imagination and be more creative around the greens from a wide variety of lies. Other features of the S5 include Low and High Bounce options that allow players to fit themselves for playing conditions and swing type, a softer teardrop shape than the previous “T” series wedge, quad-cut and loft specific grooves and CNC milled clubfaces for maximum spin in a variety of turf and weather conditions.

The S5 wedges (50, 52, 54, 56, 58, 60) will be available at retail on September 18, 2015 for $129.99 in both right and left hand in white satin finish and right hand only in blue ion finish.
