In the final leg of CNN Living Golf’s feature in Ireland, we travel to Royal County Down Golf Club, the site of the 2015 Irish Open. The Irish Open returned to Royal County Down for the first time since 1939 and in this segment, we reflect on the history of the tournament and its gradual decline. We also learn how the European Tour, Rory McIlroy and the Rory Foundation partnered up to bring the Irish Open back to prominence and into one of the premier events on the schedule once again.
Despite not inventing the game of golf, Ireland has a strong passion for the sport, as seen in the first two parts of this series. From speaking with Padraig Harrington to exploring some of the world’s most beautiful golf courses on Ireland’s West coast, we get a glimpse of how deeply embedded golf is in the country. With the Irish Open reinvented, repackaged and revitalized with the help of the world’s number 1 player, the tradition of golf will continue on in Ireland and its passion passed onto the next generation.
