Nike Golf and The Oven work with the best golfers in the sport of golf, particularly current World Number 1, Rory McIlroy, and of course, Tiger Woods, to provide them with the best possible equipment to perform on the golf course. A lot of the times, these clubs and their exact specifications are not available to the general public or only available in limited quantities.
Earlier in the year, we saw Nike Golf release the Method 006 Prototype putter made exclusively for Rory McIlroy and the pros. Only 1,000 pieces of the putter were available to the public and sold out online within seconds. Today, Nike Golf announces another tour golf club that will be available to the public in limited quantities – the Vapor Speed TW driver, designed and built to Tiger Woods’ specifications.
“Stability has always been the most important thing to me when choosing a driver,” said Woods. “I like the pear shape. It is appealing to my eye and it also has a slightly lower MOI (Moment of Inertia) that allows me to shape shots easier.”
Similar to other Vapor drivers, the Vapor Speed TW driver combines Nike’s FlyBeam-reinforced Covert Cavity Back design and a new Compression Channel, but all packaged in a smaller head shape (420cc). The Covert Cavity Back design spreads weight towards the heel and toe to stabilize the head at impact maximizing forgiveness. The redistribution of mass creates more stability, better launch conditions and faster ball speeds. A Diamana Blue Board Shaft and a clean crown design round out the Vapor Speed TW driver.
Woods’s own insights led Nike’s design team to re-design the Compression Channel, which increases the spring-like effect off the mid-to-low portion of the face to increase overall distance. In addition to a smaller head, the driver also utilizes a bonded hosel, rather than the FlexFlight adjustability system.
Woods put the driver in his bag for the first time at the Hero World Challenge in December 2014. The Vapor Speed TW driver will be available at nike.com June 1 for USD $399 and at select retailers June 15.
