The European Tour’s flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship, was held two weeks ago at Wentworth Golf Club. Rory McIlroy was in the field hoping to defend his title, but ended up missing the cut. It would the first of two consecutive missed cuts as he would not play the weekend in the following week at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open either.
It would be South Korea’s Byeong Hun An, who carded a final-round 7-under par 65 to win the tournament. An finished at 21-under par, six shots clear of Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez and Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee. This was An’s first win on one of the world’s major tours – he became only the third European Tour rookie to win the prestigious PGA Championship in its 60-year history and his 267 total over four rounds also beat the tournament record by two shots. This is also the first time the BMW PGA Championship has been won by an Asian – it allows him to climb into the world’s top 60 and secures his place in the 2015 US Open, Open Championship and a five-year exemption in Europe.
He’s not a stranger to records though, as An was the youngest-ever winner of the US Amateur Championship in 2009, at the age of 17. In the video above, watch highlights from the week and the BMW PGA Championship.
