Rory McIlroy started the week at the Wells Fargo Championship making the dream come true for Grace Vaughn during the Pro-Am. It was a fun, loose day for McIlroy, which might be the mindset that he kept going into tournament days.
After opening the tournament with rounds of 70-67, McIlroy would dominate the field at Quail Hollow, site of his first PGA TOUR victory, with rounds of 61-69 over the weekend. His Saturday 61 was McIlroy’s lowest score ever on the PGA TOUR and broke the previous course record at Quail Hollow, which he also held (62). He admittedly had 59 on his mind when he was on the tee at the 14th hole, but had to settle for 11-under par on the round and a four shot lead heading into Sunday.
The final round was much of the same dominant Rory. He pushed his lead to seven strokes and won the tournament at 21-under par. This score bested the previous tournament scoring record of 16-under par by five shots, held by Anthony Kim. McIlroy, who won the WGC-Matchplay Championship two weeks ago, now has six top-10 finishes in his last eight PGA TOUR starts. With this 11th PGA Tour win, McIlroy also passes Gary Player as the foreign-born player with the most Tour wins before the age of 30.
After the win, he flew over to London immediately in preparation for the European Tour’s BMW PGA Championship, where he is the defending champion. With his game in such great shape, are we preparing for another Summer of Rory like we saw last year? In his past 52 weeks, this is the type of golf that we can expect from Rory McIlroy:
23 starts
7 wins (BMW PGA Championship, Open Championship, WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, PGA Championship, Omega Dubai Desert Classic, WGC-Matchplay Championship, Wells Fargo Championship)
16 top 10s
21 top 25s

1 Ryder Cup
$12.9 million
215 under par
