Despite Ben Hogan being one of the iconic figures in the sport of golf, he was not without his challenges. Aside from a vicious snap hook that he fixed in the latter part of his career, Mr. Hogan also overcame a near fatal accident. CNN Living Golf’s series continues to explore the life of Ben Hogan as we take a look at Mr.Hogan’s road to recovery.
After spending 59 days in hospital after the accident, Mr.Hogan was discharged but was never quite the same physically. With physical challenges such as swelling of the legs, Mr.Hogan was unable to endure the grind of an entire season and never played more than half a dozen tournaments per year. But his greatness broke through in the 1950 US Open at Merion Golf Club when he won in a playoff.
His great play would continue and lead him to one of the greatest season known in the history of golf when he won 5 of the 6 tournaments he played in 1953, including the Masters, US Open and the Open Championship at Carnoustie Golf Links. To this day, Mr.Hogan is still the only man to hold all three titles in the same calendar year.
