Lydia Ko celebrated another birthday week (she turned 18-years-old) at Lake Merced with another victory this past Sunday in the Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic. She successfully defended her title, but had to battle it out in a playoff with Morgan Pressel through two holes before rolling in a 5-foot birdie putt.
What a great birthday week it was for Lydia! At 18-years-old, Ko already has seven LPGA TOUR titles, with two of those coming in back-to-back years at the CN Canadian Women’s Open as an amateur. Already the number 1 player in women’s golf, Ko moves to the top of the LPGA TOUR money list with the second tour victory of the year and her third worldwide title of the year.
Another young golfer who was pushing for a victory was 17-year-old Canadian, Brooke Henderson. She had a 25-foot birdie putt on the final hole to join the playoff, but missed and settled for a final round 74. She would have had the chance to become the third player in history to win on the LPGA TOUR before turning 18, but was shaky from the start. She led for most of the tournament but bogeyed two of her first three holes to fall out of the lead and never caught up. With so much young talent in both men’s and women’s golf, the sport is definitely in a great place!
